Malabsorption

Malabsorption is the state which is arising from abnormality in absorption of food nutrients across the gastrointestinal tract(GIT).

Single or multiple impairments may present depending upon the abnormality.

This may lead to serious weakness and the different types of anemias in the body.

Gastrointestinal tract absorb all the essential nutrients to provide energy in different parts of the body, if it fails to do  then there will be deficiency of nutrients which may leads to various different types of the complication in the body.


Causes of the malabsorption

  • digestive failure due to the deficiency of the enzymes.
  • structural defects
  • mucosal abnormality
  • infective agents
  • autoimmune disorders
  • infection or inflammatory of GIT

  1. Pancreatic insufficiencies- cancer of pancreas, cystic fibrosis, chronic pancreatitis
  2. bile juice insufficiencies- bacterial growth, obstructive jaundice

Due to autoimmune disorders

  4. malnutrition

Symptoms of malabsorption

  • Extra intestinal
  • intra intestinal
    • Diarrhea
    • weight loss
    • growth retardation 
    • anemias
    • muscles cramps


Diagnosis

  • blood test
  • stool test
  • intestinal biopsy
  • ultrasonography


Treatment of malabsorption syndrome

Treatment of the malabsorption syndrome is the cause and according to the symptoms occur.
  • Special nutrient supplements to be given for better absorption.
  • laxatives
  • antibiotics
  • physical exercise and yoga for better absorption in endocrine problems.
