This is a kind of pus formed in the brain due to in response to any kind of infection or trauma in the brain by an pathogen- fungi, bacteria or virus.

It can be life threatening problems if not cured on time.

The symptoms of brain abscess vary with the involvement of the area. Symptoms grow very slowly but may be serious or grow rapidly.

  • Headache
  • Neck pain
  • Fever
  • Vomiting
  • Chills
  • Confusion
  • Mental process deceases
  • Irritability
  • Decreased speech
  • Loss of vision
  • Decrease in cognitive function
  • Change in personality and behavior

Diagnosis of Brain abscess

  • Diagnosis is based on the type of symptoms and the swelling occurring in the brain.
  • CT scan
  • MRI scan
  • Lumbar scan can be helpful in diagnosis of type of pathogen involved in causing of the infection or swelling in the brain.

Treatment of Brain abscess

  • Treatment of brain abscess depend on the size of area involved where abscess is formed and damage to the brain tissues.
  • If the size of abscess formed is lesser than 2.5cm it can be cured with antibiotics.
  • In larger size surgery is the best option where antibiotics does not works. Lastly the option is the surgical removal of abscess by opening of the skull.
