Hashimoto's diseases is a kind of autoimmune disorder in which antibodies attacks their own healthy thyroid cells of the body.

It is also called Hashimoto’s thyroiditis or chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis.

Thyroid gland is the part of endocrine system which controls the metabolism of the body including the digestion, respiration, cardiovascular etc.

When antibodies attacks their own thyroid gland cells it leads to the dysfunction of the thyroid gland and a condition known as hypothyroidism is produced.

Hashimoto’s diseases is the most common cause of the hypothyroidism in the body.

It can occur in any age in both the sex but mainly found in the middle aged women.

This disease affects to 5 out of 100 people and this diseases is most common in united states.

 


Causes of Hashimoto's Diseases

The exact cause is unknown it is idiopathic in nature but some of the estimation says that production of the antibodies against the thyroid gland because of any pathological bacteria triggers the response, or may be due to genetic mutations in the body.

Aging factor also plays an important role in triggering the changes in the immune system of the body.



Symptoms of the Hashimoto's Diseases

Signs and the symptoms of this disease comes  when it reaches in the chronic condition and takes longer time.

  • 1. Weakness and lethargy
  • 2. Fatigue
  • 3. Neck swelling
  • 4. Joint and muscle pain
  • 5. Swelling in the joints and face
  • 6. Puffy face
  • 7. Brittle nails
  • 8. Dry skin
  • 9. Hair loss
  • 10. Abnormal weight gain
  • 11. Abnormal menstrual bleeding
  • 12. Memory loss
  • 13. Abdominal cramps
  • 14. Constipation



Diagnosis of Hashimoto’s Disease

Diagnosis of Hashimoto's diseases depends upon the causes and the symptoms produced in the body.

  • Blood test for the measurement of the TSH level in the blood.
  • An antibody test for the detection abnormal antibodies in the autoimmune disorder.
  • Ultrasound of the thyroid gland for the size and nodules of the thyroid gland.                                                                                                                                                       


Treatment of the Hashimoto’s Diseases

In Hashimoto’s diseases treatment depends upon the symptoms. 

Hypothyroidism is treated by replacing the hormone that is not produced by the thyroid gland.

  • Levothyroxine is the medicine given in the hypothyroidism.                   
  • Diet modification- avoid eating iodine supplements like seaweed, kelp should be avoided.
  • Physical exercises should be started to maintain the muscle strength and the range of the joints, proper blood supply to maintain the vitals of the body.
